Contributor guidelines
Before pitching an article, please review the following guidelines for publishing with the IAPP.
Articles should offer a unique perspective or new subject analysis in privacy, data protection or AI governance. Please review previously published articles to ensure your proposed idea or submission has not been previously covered.
- Authors should submit one to two paragraphs detailing the proposed topic and author's experience with the subject for consideration before submitting a draft article to ensure it is a proper and timely fit for IAPP publication.
Articles should be conversational in tone and length should fall between 800 and 1,200 words, although there is slight flexibility depending on the topic.
Footnotes are not accepted. Instead, please include necessary hyperlinks within text.
Use links, bullets and numbers sparingly.
Avoid sub-bulleted lists and stacked headlines.
The IAPP edits submissions using the Associated Press Stylebook and house guidelines. Contributed articles will also be fact-checked, so providing sources is helpful in speeding up the publication timeline.
- Contributions should be the author's own work and should not be created, in whole or in part, by a generative AI tool without the IAPP's prior written consent. The IAPP reserves the right to refuse to publish contributions or any portions of them for any reason including but not limited to the inclusion of AI-generated content.
- Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis and require approval by the IAPP Editorial Team prior to publication.
Submission does not guarantee publication.
If your submission is approved, its publication date depends on several factors, including editorial priorities, timeliness, editing required and publication constraints.
- All submissions should include a brief author biography of no more than 50 words in third person, containing the current title and organization for each author.
No more than four authors per submitted article.
For articles with multiple authors, clearly designate a lead author for communication purposes.
- To be considered by the IAPP, articles must not have been previously published in another publication.
Once the IAPP publishes an article, it asks for 24 hours exclusivity before it is published elsewhere. If, after 24 hours, the piece is repurposed on another website, please include language stating the article was originally published by the IAPP and a link back to the original.
